Despite this remarkable achievement, Black women remain significantly underrepresented in tenured faculty and senior leadership positions within academia.
Raquel Mu帽iz
Mu帽iz, Blackshear, and Hollis explore this disparity through a combination of personal testimonies from accomplished Black women and empirical research, offering a broader analysis of how racism and sexism intersect, even among highly educated professionals. The discussion is especially impactful in its examination of various institutional settings, such as predominantly white institutions, minority-serving institutions, and Historically Black Colleges and Universities, amongst which Black support varies considerably.
Together, they call upon institutions to critically examine their commitments to equity and inclusion, proposing several frameworks through which academia can better recognize, support, and elevate the achievements of Black women.
A common thread throughout this work is the importance of educating with love and persistence:听
鈥淲e are all here for love, to share a love through our skills, through our knowledge.鈥澨
Guided by empathy, this book provides valuable insights to stimulate meaningful conversations about Black women鈥檚 roles within academic institutions. Moving beyond merely highlighting challenges, it presents research-backed approaches and practical recommendations to help colleges and universities navigate a more equitable path to tenure.
