The university housing appeal process is available to full-time undergraduate students that do not wish to live off-campus and are requesting university housing for an additional semester/year outside of their guaranteed housing eligibility. Students are provided guaranteed academic years of housing through their admissions offer, and the guaranteed years begin with the enrollment start date. If a student does not wish to live on-campus during a guaranteed year, they are not able to transfer the聽housing year to another academic year. Students that appeal for university housing should select their reason for not being able to live off-campus (Financial, Returning from Leave, or Other).聽 Due to a limited number of available beds, we are not able to approve the majority of requests for on-campus housing prior to room selection.
Residential Life staff review all appeals on an individual, case-by-case basis and may contact and confer with staff from other departments as needed to verify information and make decisions.聽
Students that are submitting housing appeals should provide information about why they are interested in living on-campus. Please note that we are not able to provide on-campus housing to all students that request it. We will do our best to provide as many additional years of housing as we can.聽
General timeline:
October: Housing appeal form for the following academic year will be available. Only students with high-financial need or approved medical accommodations for on-campus housing will be approved before the closure of the housing application.
February-March: Additional appeals will be granted based on housing availability after the closure of the housing application. No additional appeals will be reviewed or approved during the room selection lottery in March.
April-August: Additional appeals will be reviewed and approved on a rolling basis as space becomes available.聽
Off-Campus Housing Resources
On the聽Off-Campus Housing Database, you as a student can review apartment listings, post a roommate profile, add your own sublet listings, and review resources. Simply log in using your Agora username and password. If you have specific questions related to off-campus housing, please visit AV研究所's Off-Campus Life page, email聽offcampus@bc.edu, or call 617-552-3075.
Students living on-campus who intend to leave housing or students with a tentative or reserved housing assignment who no longer require housing must submit a Leave of Absence form on the Agora Portal (under the My ResLife link)聽to officially notify the Office of Residential Life of their intention to leave housing or not live on-campus. Every student submitting a leave of absence form should carefully review our聽Housing Cancellation Fee and Refund Policy.聽
Students who take a leave of absence from housing are not guaranteed a specific room assignment upon return. However, preferences will be honored whenever possible. Students taking a leave of absence from the college will be required to submit a housing appeal form once they have been readmitted as a full-time day student. Please contact聽placement@bc.edu聽with any questions.
After a university leave of absence has been approved by the Academic Dean:
- Residential Life will then email the student regarding next steps for moving out of on-campus housing or cancelling an upcoming housing assignment.聽
- If you are currently living on campus, all personal belongings and unwanted items must be聽 properly removed within 72 hours of the email notification from Residential Life, and any issued keys should be returned directly to the Residential Life office in Maloney Hall 413.
Please note: If you are a three-year housing guarantee student, you are required to live off campus during your junior year. A leave of absence in any other year cannot be substituted for your mandatory junior year off-campus.
Determinations regarding guaranteed semesters of housing are made by the Admissions Office when an undergraduate student is granted admission to the University. Undergraduate students are not required to live in Boston College's on-campus housing.
Undergraduate daytime students are generally provided with three or four years of on-campus housing upon admission to Boston College. If a student is granted three years of on-campus housing, those years are applied to the first, second, and fourth academic years after initial enrollment, in that order. It is expected that during the third year, the student will secure an alternative off-campus housing arrangement.
Transfer students receive two years of guaranteed housing, which would be applicable for their entrance year (sophomore or junior year) and then their senior year.
Each year of on-campus housing that is granted covers the Fall and Spring semesters of an academic year. Therefore, and for illustrative purposes, a student who is granted a year of on-campus housing, but enrolls for just the Spring semester of the academic year (including due to their participation in a study abroad program) will have forfeited and lost a half-year of on-campus housing for the Fall semester. Any student who takes a leave of absence from the University forfeits and may lose a portion of their guaranteed on-campus housing time.聽
Students may not transfer a guaranteed year of housing to another academic year of their choice.聽For example, if a student forefeits housing their sophomore year, they are unable to use that year of housing eligibility toward another year of their choice. Additionally, if you live off campus your sophomore year, that does not impact your ability to live on-campus in future guaranteed years.聽
